Haoyu Wang is an architect and a PhD candidate at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. His emerging practice of architectural fiction, as an artistic component of his doctoral research, involves transdisciplinary exchanges between speculative design and visual storytelling to communicate the pressing architectural questions of climate change and digital turns. His ongoing works focus on alternative design approaches using immersive media and artificial intelligence. Before starting his PhD in 2023, Haoyu has practiced architecture and urban design across the United States, Japan, and China.

His current research involves developing an art genre of architectural fiction that incorporates speculative design with visual storytelling to produce counter-narratives of urban futures against media-infused paradigms of popular imagination. His ongoing experiments include speculative world-building, VR storytelling, and the emerging AI creativity in response to the pressing questions of climate change, global urbanization, and digital humanity.

My proposal synchronizes my design research on architectural fiction with the residency theme Re-Start by visualizing the unhappened futures of a post-pandemic world that had once thrived on social media during the 2020 COVID outbreak (permanent home office, service drones, etc.). The goal is to retrieve the radical impulse of fear-driven imagination for alternative futures of post-pandemic life beyond the dullness of 'everything returning to norms'.
