Sarah fernandez is a multimedia artist that has turned to computer generated images and immersive tools in order to create a parallel world to reflect upon ours. Coming from Philosophy and Anthropology studies she reinvests her thoughts, doubts, research and findings into compelling visual experiences with a strong ecological tone.
Her first Vr experience and performance were developed during her Master at the Nederlandse Film Academy: “How to swim in digital layer”. The first appearance of her digital double investigating the artist's homeland of Camargue.
Located in the South of France, on the mediterranean side, this wild territory is explored through the lens of the avatar and along side the perspectives of the non- human inhabitants of the land : the mosquito, the horse and the saint statue. We discover alongside them the traditions made up in urgency by one man to safeguard the region from the industrialization of French territories at the end of the 19th century and later taken
as ancestral when their recent invention was forgotten.
World building and fiction is a way for the artist to get closer to what it means to live here and now and to imagine other possible futures. Fiction can show many truths
otherwise hidden behind life materiality and mundanity.
By being displaced into VR or XR realities we can distance ourselves and see more clearly. Since her graduation in 2021 Sarah has continued her research and produced a few more pieces shown in Amsterdam, France, Berlin and Porto. She also joined several artistic residencies programs.
“Don’t mention the tail” is’nt the a fairy tale but a VR experience influenced by the stories and light of Northern Sweden.
Sarah was 1 of 5 artists for a 4 months residency supported by Culture Moves Europe. Project was funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut.
